They are also the access to incredible and exciting trek routes from easy to strenuous grades offering the closest and most scenic views of the mighty Garhwal peaks. Haridwar and Rishikesh are primeval holy cities and significant Hindu pilgrimage towns where the river Ganges enters the plains of north India, flowing 250 kms from its source from Gaumukh. Rishikesh has been a draw for spiritual seekers from all across the world- The Beatles, in the late '60s stayed at the ashram of the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi as well.
